Throughout the pages of magazines, one always reads about the importance of 'a balanced wardrobe.' Like a box of chocolates, your wardrobe must have a number of options to satisfy your every need. However, unlike a box of chocolates it is vital to mix different flavours (in fashion terms:styles) together. You can't separate a mouthful of vanilla creams from a mouthful of orange crunches! (

I may appear to be going off on a HUGE tangent, I think I am in fact, but it is Easter and I had to get a chocolate reference in there somewhere-I have just eaten a whole egg in record timing!) Basically, what I am trying to say is that up until now, the key style tip has been to mix and match your items in relation to their source...

You can't wear vintage by itself

You can't wear high street fashion AND you CERTAINLY CANNOT wear full designer....(not that I have that risk at this time of my life!)

You don't want to look like you have stepped out of your grandmother's closet and you also don't want to risk looking like a WAG wannabe dresses head to toe in Burberry's best!

Up until now, one has been advised to hop and jump between vintage stores on Brick Lane, the high street stores on Oxford Steet and the swish designer stores (for some!) on New Bond Street.

So much effort for one look.

You may think so, however, one high street store has pulled out a fantastic new collection aimed at cutting your shopping trip short. You no longer have to endure the awkward bus journey of a trip between Brick Lane and Oxford Street because Miss Selfridge has introduced its own vintage inspired collection. Wonderful!

No matter how much the rainy English weather tries to prove otherwise, Spring IS on its way. I know this because of the annual reappearance of FLORALS on the catwalk. FLORALS ARE EVERYWHERE.

As the flowers in the garden start preparing to bloom, so do our wardrobes. Florals are a timeless trend-they just will never go out of fashion!Luckily for us, the high street stores are starting to showcase their spring designs bringing beautiful floral dresses to every shop window. The number one store to head to this season for the best flower fabrics is undoubtedly H&M. This season H&M have launched a new line which they have named 'The Garden Collection.'

On first reading about the line on the website I became extremely intrigued to see what designs the collection incorporated. At first, I had visions of welly boots and pleated skirts however, my visions soon became more imaginative and I started envisioning dresses adorned with roses, draped with ivy and embellished with forget-me-knots. Yes, I know my reveries are far from practical and way beyond the boundaries of anything realistic but on seeing the collection, I must admit, the designers at H&M couldn't get much closer to my dreams if they sewed hundreds of sweatpeas onto beautiful silk!

The collection is gorgeous, with delicate spring linens and silks covered in bold, feminine and eye catching floral prints. Don't expect simple, clear flower prints because H&M have come up with some fantastic abstract prints that blurr into their silk backgrounds giving a wash of colour and blended forms.

This dress....makes me speechless...it must be MINE!

I know what you are thinking: How can a Spring collection be much better without a flashy designer label raising its value? Well, I have the perfect answer! The whole collection has been made using enviromentally adapted materials like recycled polyester and organic cotton which means that while looking beautiful in these summer garments you will also be contributing to a more sustainable world.

THE PRIMARK EXPERIENCE

Everytime I walk in to Primark I do so without NEEDING to buy anything. I don't go in to look for anything specific as I would when shopping in Topshop or Zara. I go in knowing that the probabilty of walking out with at least three items is very high. You can take risks in Primark. You can be open minded and care free. You don't have to be tied down to a shopping list of 'I need items' because everything, as you all know, is SO cheap! The word cheap could, for some people, be a huge turn off; cheap prices = cheap quality. However, I beg to differ, as I have been wearing and wearing and wearing the same denim Primark shirt for over a year now and it is still in pristine condition, as are the bras I live in, the dressing gown I just can't get out of in the morning and the big, wooly cardigan that has seen me through the whole winter.

Last week I waltzed into the colossal Primark branch in Leeds with no longing to buy anything specific but with a very strong intention of buying. I was on an impulse buying, spur of the moment mission taking full advantage of the fact that I could try on mounds of clothes because, at the end of the day, I could afford to walk away with 3 items of clothing costing no more that ten punds each! I headed over to the knitted jumpers first only to find that they were all on sale at no more than £4 each-fantastic! This meant I could walk out with 4 items in my brown paper Primark bag. The excitement lead me on to a rack of playsuits. Up until that moment, playsuits were unconquered fashion ground for me. I had always admired them on other people but never before tried one on, let alone bought one.

The patterns and colours drew me in and before I knew it I had a handful of six different playsuits longing to be tried on. I couldn't wait any longer, to the changing rooms I strode.

Huge dilemma.
I wanted them all.

But rules are rules...you can only shop in Primark if you buy 3 items or less (4 if one is a sale item).

The next half an hour was spent clambering in and out of and buttoning up and down the selection of playsuits I was now having to eliminate, one by one. The beige and spotty design made me feel very 1950's chic-I BLAME THE POLKA DOTS! The floral print made feel extremely summery-too summery so that one went. I then had to choose between the black and white spots and the plain black. Spots made it through.

Finally, my two favourites. They were so similar but perfect in their own ways. One had to go.....goodbye blue checks!

Playsuits are great, versatile and fun trend to try out if you haven't already. They do wonders to your figure by clinching in your waist and elongating your legs. Those with dropped necklines are incredibly flattering. Many come in pretty silk fabrics and the patterns on the high street are perfect for this spring. Once again, this is a day and night trend that cannot be overlooked!

I walked out of Primark with two playsuits, one woolen cardigan and a pair of bow print tights in a very happy mood because I had only spent £26.

If I could have one S/S collection...

...It would have to be Reiss.

Their SPRING/SUMMER LOOKBOOK is DIVINE....I want it all!

It wasn't until this year that I came across Reiss, I guess in past years I'd overlooked it despite hearing endless people wooing over it.

I would have to describe Reiss asbeing a cross between...Zara and FCUK. It incorporates Zara's sophisticated, fitted collections and its essential, basic items with FCUK's fabric, colours and detail.

I knew the first time I walked into the large, light and airy shop in the Victoria Quarter in Leeds that this would/had in a matter of seconds become my favourite store.

However, I'm a student and Reiss is just (well quite a bit in fact) out of my price range.

The silk blouses, chiffon dresses and light blazers will have to wait a few years before I can afford any of them!

If I could describe or epitomise my style in any way I would relate to Reiss' S/S collection.

I love every single piece from the tailored shorts to the incredibly chic and sophisticated bow, hareem trousers. How can anyone resist the fringe trimmed cardigans and not covet over the silk tops, tiered dresses and over sized jackets, not to mention the studded jersey dresses and beautiful, delicate blush blouses.

This is all coming from my memory...the items are lodged lovingly in my memory...

I am going to make Reiss' S/S collection the main influence of my own spring collection. Reiss' lookbook is abundant with light, fresh, floaty materials and airy, clean colours. My S/S look will be feminine and sophistacted. I am going to try an invest a little more money into buying 5 key items-a spring blazer, a pair of hareem pants, a delicate animal print silk top, a nautical skirt and finally a cropped blazer. Perhaps I'll make this more of a wishlist. When I find my perfect (affordable) Reissesque items I promise to post them on the blog!

I've already tracked down one absolutely brilliant nautical skirt which is almost identical to the one in Reiss' collection! Thank goodness for River Island...

DENIM DESTRUCTION ZONE

It's about time this blog stopped cosseting dresses and going jelly-legged over lace. It's time to put hands to scissors, bleach to washing machine and cheese grater to denim. Yes, this is the month to arm yourselves with all the sharp edged objects and corrosive liquids you have in your house (keeping within obvious health and safety precautions of course!).

It's time to get in touch with both your creative and destructive sides.

It's time to come to terms with the fact that those Miss Sixty and Topshop jeans we wore when we were 13, in reality, are never going to fit round our thighs again. No matter how much we despise this fact and try to ignore it we must ACCEPT IT!

Your old jeans will be much more useful this season as patchwork squares and mini shorts.

The fun begins with the cutting and continues with the bleaching and I think you'll find, the high point will undoubtedly be the shredding, tearing and ripping!

Wearing your grunge creations will be pretty fun too. I promise.

If you really aren't ready to come to terms with destroying your old jeans then go out and buy a new pair...denim is EVERYWEAR this spring in all sorts of shades and washes. Go denim mad and buy some denim in every item of clothing...

One condition.

Every item must undergo the home finishing grunging process.

You don't want your high high street denim to look the same as everyone else's bought denim!

Nothing wants to be washed out with bleach and cheese grated more than thi cropped jacket.

Be as creative and as brutal as possible. Experiment. Take risks. Cut arms off jackets and shred the edges. Grate and scrape through pockets. Bung all your denim into a washing machine with a load of bleach. Cut all your denim into patchwork squares and sew them onto other clothes.

If savaging denim into grunge creations isn't an appealing prospect to you then simply walk into any shop on the high street as I can guarantee you there will be the perfect 'already worked on' denim piece in there for you. You simply need to take it to the till, carry it home and pop it in your wardorbe. If my Grandma reads this blog post she feel completely bewildered as she just can't understand why anyone would buy a pair of jeans with holes and rips in them, let alone purposefully destroy their clothes on purpose!

....SKI HAT @ Hats for the Hill

My very insightful friend Lauren told me about this GREAT website over dinner which enables you to design your own unique bobble hat!

A lot of my friends are jetting off to various snow-topped mountains this Easter so I thought this would be a fantastic 'take a look at this' post to dedicate to them. I myself have never been a ski fanatic having rather disastrously demonstrated my lack of skill five years ago with several very embarrassing tumbles. Since that dreaded week spent hurtling over mogles (if that is how you spell them) and healing my aching legs after hours of snow plow I pretty much wrote off skiing altogether.

HOWEVER...

These hats are almost enough to persuade me to give it one last go....

I just spent ages flicking through different colours and styles trying to imagine how I'd look elegantly (this was definitely a dream) gliding (is that the word?) down ski runs with my colourful bobble hat on.

I think I overestimate myself on the ski front but my design skills are certainly promising!

Sorry it has been so long since my last post...I hope everyone is hitting the sales!I bought a black fully sequined jacket today for £40 reduced from £150 from Topshop!!It has Balmain shoulders, two frontal zips and is covered with a variety of sequins. This is definitley a life investment!

I GIVE IN!

Every year since I was about 10 my mum has tried to get me into two materials:

1) Leather
2) Velvet

and every year I have refused with a laugh because leather just was not 'cool' and velvet, to put it simply, definitely wasn't cool! My viewpoint has changed. This month I went shopping with my mum and, for the first time ever, I went up to the rail of leather jackets and out few to try on along with a leather bodycon skirt. It was me who spent half an hour trying on different crushed velvet dresses. And me who, after a long time of trying on, bought a leather jacket and a crushed velvet, backless, midnight blue dress.

All the while my all-knowing fashionable mother sat with a huge smile on her face!

The Futuristic look has been creeping back into fashion over last few months, however, the one-off structured dresses and superhuman shoulderpads which shops have been showcased in one-off designs haven't quite reached the limelight of the shop window or club scene despite their mesmerising extravagance.

For my 21st birthday two of my friends, Caitlin and Charlie gave me something I have wanted for such a long time!In fact, had I not just been given it, Mario Testino portraits would have definitely been switched with VOGUE COVERS on my Christmas list.

I admit. I save every magazine I buy with the hope of one day being able to say that I have all the Vogue magazines that have been published over the last hundred years (yes I will live till I am one hundred, if not older) and (yes my magazine collection will sell for hundreds) because (of course nobody else in the world is has the same plan!).

Ok. I admit it. I am well aware that I am not the only person in the world who saves every magazine and that the idea of collecting every magazine simply for the cover is utterly ridiculous because, silly people, a book has been published showcasing Vogue covers from 1916 up to the present decade. Unsurprisingly it is called Vogue Covers and I just can't stop myself from flicking through it every 5 minutes longing that I had a copy of the 1939 August issue in my collection.

The book starts with Helena Thurlows cover 'September 1916: Forecast of Autumn Fashions'

and concludes with Nick Knight's cover photograph of Kate Moss in the September 2006 issue: The New Smart.

Despite the glamorous 21st century covers sporting high edge photographs of celebrities like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Kylie Minogue looking painfully beautiful and nostalgic and the covers of the 1960s, everyone shining with the doe eyed face of Twiggy, it is the covers published between 1916 and 1930 which really attract my attention.

THEY ARE JUST SO BEAUTIFUL

I thought I'd keep my examples of these glorious covers seasonal and show you some of my favourite winter-themed Vogue covers illustrated predominantly by George Wolfe Plank, Helena Dryden and Georges Lepape.

Despite being just under one hundred years old, there is something so refreshing about these beautifully detailed and exquisitively illustrated covers which makes me feel all dreamy with mesmerised fascination.

There is something very magnificent about the hundreds of stars that float across each page and the rosy cheeks that are kept warm by fur coats.

The covers step away from the celebrity image and the glossy photographic limelight which preoccupies the covers of today. These covers dazzle as a result of their understated decadence. In a way they seem less self-conscious and image aware - a trait which could perhaps be seen as an ever-increasing flaw in society today. They are, as a result, more inviting and perhaps less intimidating? They remind me of the homely images you find on Christmas biscuit boxes or the comforting drawings on advent calenders. Every reader can sink into the dreamy world of the lady floating elegantly in a night sky surrounded by stars. In contrast, I know I can't relate to the perfect photos of Kate Moss that stare out at me from every magazine cover-I would like to but I simply can't. I just look at her in my insignificant form with a sense of awe. That sounds very sad but it is true!

This doesn't mean that after a year of beautifully drawn covers I wouldn't miss the flawless complexion of Claudia Shiffer or the natural beauty of Emma Watson. It just might be nice sometimes to be swept away into the mystical world of Georges Lapape.

I'm sure in eighty years, when I have collected my final copy of Vogue magazine, I will look back to the utopian days of Kate Hudson and Penelope Cruz and long for them to return and take over the superhuman race of celebrities that will line the magazine shelves in the future.

I certainly am going to be one of those 'Those were the good old days' kind of ladies. Oh dear!

I can't keep you waiting any longer! Today I spent about half an hour photographing the Hoopers window display in Tonbridge Wells. Every Christmas Hoopers install the most magically theatrical display around their whole store. Every scene is so compelling and intricately designed. The Royal Ballet donate past costumes every year and this year the dresses consisted of blue silk and white pinafores. Can you guess what the theme was yet? There were also white rabbits and teacups and playing cards. Surely you can guess now?!

THE VERSATILE CROP

Having hit the high street at possibly the most unpredictable time of the year-mid winter-crop tops could possibly the trickiest trend to handle. The cold weather doesn't provide any inspiration and nor do our pale untanned complexions. However, don't give up on the crop because here are some ways to wear what we all want. Contrary to belief, you really don't need a toned, washboard tummy to wear the crop and look good. In fact, I think cropped tops look more stylish worn over other garments like strapless tops and dresses. If you do have a tummy like Madonna show it off by wearing a cropped top by itself. Keep it edgy but sophisticated by teaming with something more conservative like a great pair of jeans. If you don't want to bare your tummy to the wintry world, all you need to do is buy the following basic items:

Plain Boobtube dress. £14. Topshop

Plain black and white vest top. 2 for £9. Topshop

Cotton Lycra Tunic. £12. Topshop

Keep these undergarments simple, preferably black or white in order to create a plain base layer against which the cropped top will stand out.

Wear the cropped tops over the tunic and boobtube dresses. This look is great in the evening, particularly when the cropped top is embellished and when teamed with a black or school grey blazer. It is also wearable during the day with a big knitted jumper. Team the vest tops under cropped tops and wear with jeans or high waisted skirts and shorts.

Yesterday I travelled the long and very exhausting 5 hour train journey back home from Leeds to Tunbridge Wells. I showed my dedication to fashion by wheeling or, shall I more appropriately say, dragging my uber huge suitcase up hills, through numerous ticket barriers, into taxis, out of taxis, along M25 length train platforms and through my front door. Everyone along the way stared at me sympathetically and numerous businessmen asked if I needed any help with my bags but I passed down all the offers knowing very well that if I agreed I would be faced with the question, 'What on earth have you got in here?' No man would understand my answer-just clothes. I HAD to bring back all my coats because each suffices for different levels of cold, I have my fur, my duffle, my trench and then there is the issue of dresses. I have four 21st birthday parties over Christmas-each requires a different dress and each requires a choice of three potentials-you do the maths.

EEK!

I felt like Cameron Diaz in 'The Holiday' pulling her suitcase in the snow however, I looked far less glamorous and had not just one but four bags all packed to the brim with clothes. I never knew fashion could be so demanding and HEAVY. It was completely worth it though. Despite now having blistered hands and incredibly stiff wrists I can start to enjoy Christmas in Tunbridge Wells in a very fashionable manner!

I do however need to start planning how I am going transport the clothes I brought with me plus the clothes I am ultimately going to buy in Tunbridge Wells. Did I mention, Tunbridge Wells has some brilliant shops, particularly boutiques....

Last weekend I went to Clotheshow Live in Birmingham, I seem to have been the only one, I admit-this is very embarrasing-to have never heard of the event before. I can't believe it because it is SUCH A HUGE event. As a result I am starting to doubt my fashion knowledge-I clearly have no idea-there is a world of fashion out there completely alien to me. Perhaps I should stop the blog and start another one on cooking. I can't cook. Or maybe knitting. I certainly can't knit. I am going to take this shock to my system as a learning curve. I will continue writing the blog, however, to make up for my lack of knowledge which shocked a few of my friends I am going to donote the next few days in my calender to revealing some of the shops I discovered at the clothes show and spent most my time hovering at trying to work out how to spend my £30 budget (how very good of me!)

NEVER FULLY DRESSED

Never Fully Dressed was one of the first stalls that caught my eye, and continued to for well over half an hour. I was drawn in by the excess of pearls and sequins. The dresses and tops are designed to look and be incredibly luxurious and edgy yet still remain incredibly feminine.

THE FIFTH OF DECEMBER- A GIRL CAN ONLY DREAM!

Ever since walking into my first Alice Temperley store two years ago I have developed an unrequited love towards all of her beautifully embroidered and incredibly elegant greek-goddess inspired designs. My love is unrequited because I can only stare, sometimes run my hands through and admire the silk and chiffon items. I can't try them on because I can't resist the temptation that faces me once one of her lovely dresses is resting on my. I'd have to go on to place the utterly adored dress on the till counter and then hand over my pining bank card. Unrequited love is horrible and harsh. The pains caused by unrequited love will, however, be rewarded one day when, fingers crossed, I am an incredibly rich fashionista marching up to the Alice Temperley till counter throne with one of her designs and, without feeling the shock that zaps through my body everytime. I will hand over my very happy bank card and buy the dress of my dreams. I only want one. No more, not two or three, just one Alice Temperley dress (this does exclude the Alice Temperley wedding dress I will hopefully also buy one day!). I will be the happiest girl alive when I can buy an Alice Temperley dress.

BE WARM BUT STYLISH

After having no warm clothes to brace last years winter wonderland blizzard which turned Hyde Park into an ice rink, I have decided, this year to plan ahead and invest in some winter warmers. This post is a warning to all Fresher's. IT ONLY GETS COLDER AFTER CHRISTMAS! There is something very satisfying about piling on more and more layers as the weather gets colder and colder. Big wooly knitted jumpers are vital, however, your winter wardrobe shopping spree shouldn't stop at fur lined coats. I am sure all students can agree with me when I say that the temperature inside your house is probably degrees colder than the temperature outside. For this reason, the scarves and gloves that you buy after reading this will probably be the most useful things you have purchased in the last year. My housemate Olivia spends her whole life in her leopard print fur coat and I personally can't get enough of my Dad's old knitted jumpers that I pulled out of the attic a few months ago. However, the moth eaten wool doesn't quite give off the stylish aura I wish for.

I want bright colours and interesting patterns.

So, I have decided to buy some winter accessories that will keep me snug both inside and outside whilst, at the same time, ensuring I still remain fashionable. UNDISCOVERED TREASURE

Whilst travelling in Costa Rica a year ago I came across this fantastic beach-front market in Manuel Antonio where hundreds of colourful cotton wraps blew upwards carried by the wind and an endless array of beautiful stone and shell necklaces adorned the pavements.

After spending a while 'pavement shopping' I was about to head back to my hotel when I spotted this tiny stall selling beautiful unique, handmade silver rings set with precious stones. I stood at this tiny table trying on hundreds of rings for ages-I just couldn't decide which ring to buy. In the end I went for one set with a large red and small turquiose stone which hasn't left my finger since. I absolutely love it because it is ONE OF A KIND. People always compliment me, and ask where I bought it and sigh deeply when I say Costa Rica. Ever since leaving Costa Rica I have spent hours searching through endless rings but they all look the same-nothing ever stands out, UNTIL this weekend when I came across this fantastic stall in the O2 arena.

When I was about 13 I went through a pretty bad teenage fashion crisis (as everyone does). After my reality check finally clicked I immediately threw everything I had bought in those few, highly damaging months as away far away as I possibly could. The baggy jeans which were big enough to fit my head through one of the legs were thrown into the bin alongside all my incredibly bland and boyish hoodies. However, one thing did survive. My then incredibly treasured silver studded belt made the cut and, for the last 7 years has been collecting dust under my bed. This weekend I bought a beautiful floaty silk top from Kate Moss at Topshop. It as a beautiful grey and pink pattern on it but the main feature has to be the off the shoulder sleeves which make it even more elegant. I love it because it is so versatile, I can wear it with leggings in the day and jeans and heels at night. The most appelaing thing about it was that it was on sale! This was my first Kate Moss purchase, I got it for £20 reduced down from £40! The sale is still on this week, hurry though as the key pieces are selling fast!

I don't usually buy light floaty items as I worry about them not being warm but, as I recently realised, they are fantastic for layering over other items to add texture and make thick, heavy winter clothes more feminine. Most importantly, they look fantastic teemed with a big wooly knitted cardigan.

This season is all about layering and contrasting.

So I’ve recently been taking a bit of a back seat with the blog! I have unfortunately had two very dull essays to write and have had barely any time to scour my favourite fashion websites! However, after a quick trip home to Nottingham this weekend I of course managed to have a look through my Mum’s old wardrobe. She has finally decided to have a clear out and amongst the rails I found this...

Possibly the most gorgeous dress ever? And guess what...it fits me! I finally have my perfect Vintage find!

My Dad bought this dress for my Mum on a trip to New York in the early 80s. He bought it from a boutique shop in Trump Tower, it is by a make called ‘Caché’.

Wow, ‘do not dry clean’ and ‘do not wash’, very practical indeed!

I’ve been invited to a friend’s 21st in December and the theme is Festive Black Tie, I think this dress will be perfect for it...lots of sparkle, I can’t wait! So after finding this little gem I thought I’d have a look at what sequins are on the high street at the moment and they are everywhere!

Passion for Prints

Two years ago, I lived in London with Hannah Kay (the wartime wonder) for 5 months. We were both working as secretaries in banks and trying to earn as much money as we could to go travelling. The dire reality for us was that saving meant NO spending! I had to restrain myself everytime I walked past a shop. It was horrible. There are A LOT of shops in London. HORRIBLE. I was living in London, one of the fashion capitals of the world, and I couldn't shop! Walking down Oxford Street was impossible. In fact, I had to ban myself from ever getting off the tube at Oxford Circus. Just looking at the sign made my heart wrench. More to the point, I spent EVERY minute of EVERY day in black pencil skirts and white shirts-I couldn't even afford to jazz up my work wear!

One winter day, whilst braving the icy walk in stiletto's from the tube station to the office, I came across an incredibly colourful and immediately uplifting billboard advertising a Matthew Williamson exhibition at the London Design Museum. My heart skipped a beat.

I visited the exhibition straight after I finished work the next day. I walked in praying that my craving for fashion would be satisfied and I walked out with an overwhelming sense of awe and happiness. I had had my fashion fix for that month and it only cost me £5!

The exhibition was rich with bright, vibrant colours and highly intricate and creative patterns.

Strolling through the exhibition gave me the sense of spinning around in kaleidoscope. All around me decorative shapes and vivid colours were emerging. Everything was so intricately designed and beautifully crafted.

Matthew Williamson is renowned for his butterfly wing patterns and bright vibrant colours. His designs at the exhibition reminded me of silk paintings; the colourful dyes seemed to have seeped fluidly into the delicate materials. They were vibrant, refreshing and vivid as well as subtle.

You are probably thinking, where on earth is she going with this?

Well, today I came back from my lectures feeling miserable. The dark rain clouds weren't exactly elevating my mood. Then something happened. Something very similar to the moment I spotted the Matthew Williamson billboard. Flashback. I visited the LIPSY ONLINE STORE website and came across these beautifully patterned dresses, very like the designs above by Matthew Williamson.

The only difference now is that I am not saving so, even though I really shouldn't, I can SPEND!

A little bit about Jimmy Choo...

Maylaysian born shoe designer, Jimmy Choo started his career by setting up a shop in East London in 1986. His craftsmanship and designs were soon noticed and he reached international notability when his creations featured in an eight page spread of a 1988 issue of Vogue. His designs are renowned for being chic, sexy, sophisticated and very expensive! Luckily for students, his designs for H&M are affordable so now everyone can buy and savour them!

Other fashion designers that have collaborated with H&M include Roberto Cavalli, Karl Lagerfeld, Viktor & Rolf, Stella McCartney and Comme des Garcons founder Rei Kawakubo and more recently, Matthew Williamson.

The thought of having a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes in my wardrobe for an hour makes me excited which is why, on the 14th November, I will definitely be the first person to walk through the shop doors of H&M, the first person to touch his designs and the first person to walk home with an H&M Jimmy Choo bag in my hands and a HUGE smile on my face.

GIANT platform high-heeled stilettos are swarming the shelves in shoe departments.

Can anyone remember when this last happened?

Once again, we look back to the so-called period of 'anti-fashion' (you wouldn't have guessed where the name came from from the photo below) the NINETIES!

The infamous British fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood re-introduced the high heeled platform shoe into high-fashion in the early 1990s. It was while wearing a pair with five inch platforms and nine inch heels that the super model Naomi Campbell took a tumble on the catwalk at a fashion show in Paris.

The best memories I have of platform shoes, however, are the times I spent dancing around my living room dressed in my mum's high heels with blond pigtails to 'If you wanna be my lover' and 'Who do you thnk you are?' Yes, I was Baby Spice and , yes, I was in my own Spice Girl band! Throughout the late 1990's whilst the Spice Girls were pulling out continuous hit singles and becoming the UK's bigest phenomenum, platform shoes were hitting the world of high-fashion HARD! The Spice Girls took what, the 5 inch platform heels we now buy today, to extreme 9 inch levels!

The platform shoes on sale today are, to the relief of boyfriends and our ankles, a little less ambitious. However, don't expect anything too safe as platform heels must have a reasonable sized platform to count and this season, it is all about the platform heel!

To have a break from my university set texts, I have been reading a book called “A Vintage Affair” by Isabel Wolff and for any fashion lovers it is a really enjoyable read. Fashion Trend: Polka Dots!

A fashion classic...again and again polka dots work their way back in to our wardrobes. After reading this month’s Tatler, I am dotty about dots all over again! The November 2009 Tatler is a special collector’s edition, the magazine has been running for 300 years! Can you believe it? “300 years of mischief”as it says on the cover. It’s great to think that the people of the 1700s were not that different to us after all, fashion was important and of course, they were mischievous!

The dress that caught my eye in Tatler was a beautiful ,silk, Moschino Cheap and Chic dress for £615...not so cheap but very chic! There are many equivalents on the high street at the moment which are probably more in my price range! Included in the polka dot feature was a picture of Gordon Conway wearing polka dots on a shoot for Tatler back in 1926. These dots really have staying power don’t they?

How Very Stylish!

Hannah stuck out from the crowds of lecture-going students like an exquisite silk evening dress would amongst a pile of old knitted jumpers. I felt like I had hopped into my time machine and travelled to London in the 1940's. The three words that came to mind when I first spotted her were,

She looked cooly chic in her midnight blue, silk, high waisted trousers, rose pink, loose fitting top and brown, snakeskin leather bag. The icing on the cake, for me, were her perfectly worn-down, brown leather brogues.

Hannah's high-waisted trousers epitomise World War II fashion. Throughout which women increasingly wore pinched in trousers rather than skirts and dresses. At the time this break was radical and came as a result of increased labour jobs for women. The introduction of trousers into women's fashion had a lot to do with the increased opportunitites for women who, during the war, had to take on laborous jobs previously held by men. Trousers were first publicised in Vogue magazine in 1939 and were soon worn by stars such as Katherine Hepburn which set them off aa a new and accepted trend. The 1940's was renowned for it's more masculine yet still elegant wear of often high-wasited, clinched in at the waist and upturned trousers as pictured in the image above.

Women took on a more masculine appearance, though fabrics such a silk and satin ensured items exhorted an elegant and feminine feel. The button detail and pleated waistline ensure Hannah's trousers maintain a feminine feel and are also extremely flattering to her waistline. The high waist acts to elongate her legs. The loose fitting top juxtoposes perfectly with the tailored waitline of her trousers in a graceful, comlimentary manner.

Hannah adds a tipple of quirkiness and fun to her smart outfit by accessorising with a hair piece which also acts to feminise her outfit and make it more casual.

Where do you shop the most?

I love to shop at vintage stores as I enjoy collecting classic items of clothing which will stay in fashion year after year. Spittalfields market is great for picking up some great bargains as well as unique pieces. The idea of reviving past trends appeals to me and vintage shops always have some brilliant items from different fashion decades. Having said this I think it is important to mix vintage pieces with new, high street trends. My favourite High Street shops include Zara, Topshop and Urban Outfitters where there are a number of individual designers showcasing their work like, Natalie Wood who designed my trousers.

How would you describe your style?

I guess, experimental. I couldn't really generalise as I have a lot of different styles that I like. I'd say quirky and versatile. I love finding pieces that you can wear over and over again to create different looks. I like accessorising-head scarfs are my latets craze.

What is your favourite item of clothing?

I have quite a big collection of waistcoats from embroidered to sequined etc... They make any outfit fun. Most of them I have picked up in markets or vintage fairs.

Any Style secrets?

I think accessorising is key to making an outfit interesting and different. I love buying unique brooches from vintage shops. Most of my jewellry I buy from charity shops or vintage fairs. The idea of them being authentic makes them more interesting and special. I also love layering clothes.

How would you describe the fashion in Leeds?

Very ecclectic which means you can be as experimental as you like and wear some crazy things. Inspiring, as everyday you see people wearing items that you wouldn't usually consider but then really want.

'How Stylish!'

Walking around uni we are constantly looking out for interesting styles and surveying what everyone wears. Each week we are going to take a photo of someone who we have soptted as having their own innovative and individual style and interrogate them about their style and where they like to shop etc. We will then publish their fashion profile on our blog. With over 30 000 students in Leeds there are thousands of different styles to be seen and we want to snap some of the most edgy, individual and creative for you to see.

'Get the look'

This post will be a follow on from 'How very stylish' as we both know how annoying it is when you see someone wearing, say, a coat that you absolute love yet have no way of finding out where it is from LE creepy!). We will take the place of the middle fashionista and hunt every shop on the high street for items similar to those featured in the 'How very stylish' post so that you can then go and make a purchase if you want.

'Vintage Find'

As we have already announced, we live just around the corner from two brilliant vintage stores, 'Best Vintage' and 'Retro Vintage,' so we thought it would be a great idea to photograph our favourite Vintage find each week. We go in and scour around basically every day so we won't miss any new items that come in-we hope!

Vintage shops are gold mines for finding classical, key pieces that will remain timeless in your wardrobe and, everything is affordable, which is good news for students. On top of this, the feeling you get when you DO find something is unchallengeable!Being ecclectic is key to being stylish, so we want to find vintage pieces which will look great teemed with both high street and designer items. We will try to trace back the items we photograph and give you an insight into the history of different trends, such as houndstooth. If you are lucky, the items will hopefully still be in the shop for you to buy!

'On the Mannequin'

We have a new member in the basement! Our recently purchased MANNEQUIN!

Each week we will shop (such hard work) until we find an outfit that relates either to our 'How very stylish' feature or our 'Latest trend feature.' The outfit we chose will be styled by yours truly and modelled by our mannequin.

Power Dressing

With the strain of the current economic climate pulling everyone down, fashion designers have proposed a new trend that is guaranteed to make every woman feel in control and utterly magnificent. It's time to delve into your attic and reintroduce your mum's endless boxes of shoulder padded items back into the world. Shoulder pads are, would you believe it, back in fashion and bringing a lot of attitude with them. Between the 1930's and 1980's any item of clothing not fitted with shoulder pads was deemed 'unfashionable' which, I have to announce is, once again, the case today. Shoulder pads were classed by John. T. Molloy in his 1975 edition of 'Dress for Success' as the defining fashion trend for power dressing. The padded shoulder look masculinises, in an elegant way, any item of clothing and asserts an immediate sense of power and control. The craze of 'power dressing' was first popularised in the 1980's by women seeking status and power. I'm sure you won't be surprised to find out that the tren soon became a universal craze.

Shoulder pads have been relaunched, most successfully, by Balmain and its collection of pointed, high shouldered jackets that pay tribute to the infamous 'King of Pop'-Michael Jackson. The pointed bone shoulder pads create an interesting, sharp silhouette. Balmain jackets have been seen on numerous celebrities, including Madonna and Beyonce but, unfortunately for students, they come with a triple figure price tag. Luckily, the trend has hit the high street despite the doubts of fashion critics and an ecclectic mix of pad integrated items are available.

Not such a shrinking violet!

You will certainly not be a shrinking violet this winter as purple seems to be making a fashion come back! Only a couple of years ago did we see purple hit the catwalks in autumn 2007. By being a fashion must-have twice within a few years this shows how great purple really is. Purple is a great statement for the winter wardrobe, bold and bright yet has a greater sense of warmth than some other colours that we might see. Purple has long been associated with royalty, dating back to the Romans when the dye to make the colour was more expensive than any other. Since then, purple has been associated with the regal wearers and a symbol of great opulence.

Purple is such a deep colour giving an air of mystery to the wearer, so grab an item today and finally feel like a Princess and become a ‘Mysterious Girl’! The reason I love purple so much is because it has all the same slimming qualities as black but will always allow you to stand out from the crowd. It suits almost any skin tone/hair colour with the pastel colours suiting the blond wearers.

Figure-clinging, lycra workout wear first hit the fasion scene in the 90's and immediately became a must-have trend. I'm sure you all remember the infamous tv show, Saved by the Bell, and have all witnessed your mum bouncing around the living room to fitness videos hosted by women dressed head-to-toe in turquoise and purple lycra. Yes, that was the nineties. The decade that saw the mass production of materials such as lycra, pvc and spandex for the world of fashion. If you are struggling to remember, all you have to do is look back to the time Michelle Pfeiffer starred as Catwoman in Batman Begins and you have the epitiome of the grunge-loving 90's.

Despite being named the decade of 'anti-fashion,' one trend in particular has made a huge comeback. Yes, you've probably guessed-LYCRA-in the form of leggings. Luckily, for the sake of the 21st Century, designers have revived and improved the trend to produce numerous different forms and styles, all made from a variety of materials such as lace, denim, pvc, sequins and cotton. Leggings are now renowned for their versatility and the good thing is that you are no longer guaranteed to look like a dominatrix, though, the opportunity to is still there. Legging's are a 'must have' item this winter so I have decided to put together a collection of what I rate as the top ten leggings on the high street this season. If the styles I have chosen don't appeal to please don't give up, there is a vast selection out there still to be seen. My top ten styles are:

Our First Vintage Find...

To our delight and the dismay of our bank balances there is small, but fantastic, vintage shop called ‘Best Vintage’ on the corner of our street. I’m sure those who live in Leeds know it very well as it is always buzzing with people. Walking through the doors of the lilac painted shop this morning the first thing I did was skim along the line of cut-out white leather stilettos that fill the shop window. Fortunately, for my bank balance, they were all size five so I moved sadly on and only to come face to face with the most perfect vintage jacket I have ever seen and, it was houndstooth!

The design screams Chanel with its elegantly cut neckline, shiny gold buttons but, most importantly, its bold and oh-so-stylish houndstooth pattern.

I just can't take my eyes off the gold buttons!

Ever since it rocked the 50’s the bold, black and white broken checks of houndstooth have made endless reappearances on the fashion scene. Every year the pattern seems to make clothes appear even bolder and more sophisticated than the previous year. As Vogue magazine comments, houndstooth breaks up the dark, enigmatic black and charcoal shades that come with most winter wardrobes by giving them a lighter, fresher feeling. Houndstooth has been pacing itself up and down catwalk shows by Alexander McQueen, Chanel and, in a more playful abstract form, Moschino. Such designers show that houndstooth is most striking when used on fitted jackets, pencil skirts and loose high-waisted trousers. The infamous pattern has hit the high street too. Stores like Dorothy Perkins (featured below) are producing abstract watered down versions that would look fantastic with fitted blazers or chunky knitted scarves. M&S have also brought out a hounsdtooth patterned cardigan which will make any outfit edgy.

I never forget a dress...

Emma and I have a mantra...”you never forget a dress”. I can remember almost any night by what somebody was wearing and I truly believe that every dress has a story.

I think my love of clothes has been inherited from my mum. She is (without being biased) the most glamorous lady I have ever met. One of my first childhood memories is sitting on her bed whilst she was getting ready for a ball. I watched in amazement as she pulled on her satin evening gloves that perfectly matched her beautiful red and pink dress. The dress had a tight bodice and layers and layers of chiffon that spiralled down in tendrils to her ankles...a real princess dress. This dress is still hanging in our attic along with rails and rails of clothes which my mum can’t bear to throw away and I hope to add to this collection over the years!

Being back in Leeds I have not been able to bring my full collection of dresses with me, my dad actually put a stop to that when I’d filled 3 cars full with my things! Here, however are a few of my favourites...(from left to right)

This is one of my favourite dresses in my wardrobe at the moment. The colours compliment each other perfectly, the dress has the essential floral pattern for summer yet the pixalated appearance makes it modern and edgy. I couldn’t think of a better dress for a summer barbecue, comfortable and relaxed yet chic and sexy with the clingy material hugging all the right places.

Well, what can I say about this one? I don’t think a dress has ever captured my style more. You can imagine my happiness after falling in love with this dress and then realising it was in the sale! The layers of net skirt give the dress a tutu like appearance. The vertical stitching on the bodice elongates the wearer’s figure and the grey, elasticated waistband provides a great contrast from the femininity of the lace. The corset top and the cups certainly make it my Madonna dress!

I think a body-con dress is an absolute essential in every girl’s wardrobe. The colour is so striking and looks great with a tan. There is no better item to accentuate a girls figure and the thickness of this dress’s material really helps out when things need to be held in! So...next buy, my own Hervé Léger...a girl can only dream!

Silk ‘Yuriko’ top. All Saints. June 2009.
All Saints is my favourite high street store and on many occasions I find myself top to toe in everything All Saints! Although this is a top, I wear this garment as a dress. It may be a little on the short side but is such a versatile item, great with bare legs in the summer and with black opaques in the winter. The silk falls beautifully around the bat-wing sleeves and the gathering in the middle gives the dress shape. Again, sequins are a must-have item in any girl’s wardrobe and the pretty pink and blue sequins allow this dress to ooze glamour.

I confess.

My wardobe contains far too many dresses. More dresses than I can possibly wear. More dresses than I need. But certainly not enough to stop me buying anymore! I want every dress I see and every dress I feel (and hope) wants me! One of my most unforgettable memories is the day my grandma, when I was about 15 years old, took me upstairs to her enormous wooden wardrobe and pulled back the doors to reveal the most incredible collection of evening gowns and cocktail dresses which she had saved from before I was born. The black velvet, green satin and white lace slid lovingly through my fingers and an overwhelming sense of happiness buzzed through my body. From that day I (definitely as an excuse) blame my grandma for my addiction to dresses. With her collection of dresses in my wardrobe and my own ever-expanding collection rapidly building up I can't help but not reveal a few of my absolute favourites:

The simple black and white striped patterning gives this dress a very chic, striking and tres Parisian appearance. Whenever I wear it I feel as though I will leap any moment onto the catwalk at a Chanel fashion show or even onto the set of My Fair Lady alongside Audrey Hepburn and her fabulous balck and white striped, lace gown.

I have to be feeling brave to wear this dress as the skirt is virtually inexistent, however, when I do I feel extremely fun and, as a result of the studs, a little naughty! Everything about this dress-the studs, its length, the skirt volume and the crossed back scream out 'don't mess with me' and instantly gives whoever wears it A LOT of presence and attitude.

This dress must be worn with your hair up as the back swoops so elegantly down to your waistline to be met at the bottom by a perfect satin bow. It is shiny, satin and red-what more can you want? There is something fantastic about a red dress which guarantees a whoever wears one a wonderful night! (note to self: I must do a feature on red dresses!)

The basement of our new house in Leeds has been converted from a damp, dreary underground into a bright, edgy fashion haven. As two fashion crazy friends we can’t help but be inspired by the endless magazine pages that cover the whitewashed walls. Some people might think we are mad but really we are in love, with everything and anything to do with fashion! As the poet Pedro de la Barca stated, ‘’ love that is not madness is not love!’’

The eclectic array of evening dresses, handbags and jackets which hang neatly in our wardrobes stand as proof of such love, though not proof enough, which is why we have decided, after a summer of planning, to start writing a blog devoted to fashion. In this new and very stylish basement is where our blog writing will begin.

As two English students we will combine our love of fashion with our interest in writing to address our views on a variety of styles and trends. We want to gain an insight into student style so where better to be living than in the fashion capital of the North! Each week we want to produce a magazine style blog post that covers everything from fashion must-haves, to details about fashion houses, designers and publications! We want to know more about fashion and inform you at the same time. The key thing is that we aim not to dictate what to wear but, instead, to inspire you to try different trends and styles!
